BIM ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION IN THE WORLD OF AEC

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is accelerating more intensively and has become a primary aspect throughout the AEC industry. This expeditious rate of adoption within the industry has been promoted through governmental mandates, client requisite and through its applications in large organizations.

Till the 20th century Architectural and Technical drawings were drawn by trained draughtsmen where drafters would help convert the design conceptions and sketches of an architect to technical detailed plans.

In 1963 Ivan Edward Sutherland developed the very first Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) the solution to help architects, designers, drafters, and engineers understand how a computer can help aid in the making, modification, duplication, analysis of designs. In the early 1980’s the utilization of CAD in the AEC industry stimulated and entitled for improved effectiveness and support companies to develop their own design templates which they could rework in upcoming projects.

The only problem with CAD solutions was that they could not be extensively optimized for creating and managing information about building elements, material, and assets that companies wanted.

Therefore, using the basic principles of CAD, the conceptual development of BIM started in 2002 via Autodesk where details of building objects could be stored and managed directory for a project. Whereas the information on these objects was stored in directories, frequent changes to the project take place all through the built assets life cycle.

Barriers to BIM Implementation

BIM implementation in the AEC industry has been restricted by many barriers, which can be classified in five major groups-:

  • Lack of national standards
    • High cost of application
    • Lack of skilled labour
    • Organizational issues
    • Legal issues

BIM Impact on AEC Industry

  • Fewer coordination problems
    • Productivity increase
    • Bid winning rate

BIM implementation is necessary for the AEC industry. Barriers to BIM implementation have attracted widespread awareness. With investigation and overcoming the identified barriers, BIM will help the AEC industry to evolve rapidly.
